Sweden Motorhome Rental
Compare RV Rental and Campervan Hire in Sweden
Sweden is a land of huge lakes, hundreds of waterways, dense forests and soaring mountains and glaciers, and, above all, wide-open spaces just waiting to be explored. One of the best ways to see the country is to take to the roads in a campervan rental in Sweden, which will give you the freedom to stop and linger when you find the perfect spot. In addition to all her other charms, Sweden is probably the safest country in Europe, which makes camping even more attractive here, and the campsites are excellent. Arrange to pick up your Sweden motorhome rental from Stockholm on arrival, and set off for a perfect Scandinavian holiday.
When it comes to Swedish motorhome rental, everything you need to get you started and out on the road is right here. In the following page we’ll take you through every aspect of renting a motorhome in Sweden, starting with an easy-to-follow guide on types of campervan, motorhome or RV, before recommending some top motorhome rental companies in Sweden.
We’ll follow on with some top attractions to check out in Sweden, great if you don’t have clue about where to start or end your Swedish road trip, but it’s the sections after that need your full attention.
Undertaking a self-drive holiday in Sweden -or anywhere for that matter- is all about having a great time, of course. But to facilitate that you’ll need to do a little bit of homework. Count on is to get that sorted as well with the final three sections, not to be taken lightly.
We’ll get these rolling with some simple travel information for your Swedish motorhome rental trip -though it needs properly investigating- then a spot of weather advice. And for a country where temperatures can dip well below freezing, it’s not as restrictive as you may think! Last, but by no means least, some FAQ.
This could even be the most important part of the whole page, when it comes to hiring a campervan, motorhome or RV in Sweden there are some things you need to know in advance. So, make sure you check!
Types of RV Rental Vehicles in Sweden
There are dozens of different campervans, motorhomes or RVs for rent in Sweden, but what’s the difference between them, and how do know which one is right for you and/or your travelling companions?
You’ll be relieved to know the answer lies in between two factors: your budget and how many people are accompanying you on your Swedish self-drive vacation.
Once established you can begin to break down some basic features. You’ll already have an idea of sleeping capacity (make sure it matches seating capacity because it doesn’t always!) and, at the very least, you’ll have a kitchen. The finer details in decision-making, when choosing the perfect Swedish motorhome, will revolve around the interior -WC, shower living space etc- and the driving experience in terms of engine power and what you’re comfortable driving.
Your last consideration should be about styling. Sure, that semi-integrated motorhome may look good, but for less wedge and more interior space, that cabover might be more of a practical option.
And before we explain stylistic differences, ‘RV’ stands for ‘recreational vehicle’ with a flexible/specified, definition depending on where you’re from. As far as the below is concerned, any Swedish campervan or motorhome is, for all intense and purposes, an RV.
Motorhome
These come in two basic flavours, the more traditional Cabover (overcab or alcove) variety, is instantly recognisable by the space-saving protrusion over the driver’s cab. The more contemporary semi-integrated (low profile) option, arguably, has the edge over aesthetic consideration, but this could come at the expense of space…

Sweden: RV Rental Locations
There are a variety of options when it comes to Swedish cities and towns, and what they have to offer in terms of Sweden Motorhome Rentals. Below, we’ve taken three locations in Sweden and listed their motorhome rental providers as examples of what to expect.
These examples also serve as reminders that, while your preferred campervan or motorhome rental company in Sweden may have precisely what you need, they may not be conveniently located close to your destination. And remember, if your campervan or motorhome rental company doesn’t drop/deliver your vehicle to you, or they’re not located in your airport, you’ll need to pay additional transfer fees.
Stockholm
You can arrange to have your campervan rental in Sweden ready and waiting for you when you get to the capital city, Stockholm. A transfer can be arranged from Arlander Airport or any city location to the depot, or you can take a taxi. At the depot you will receive instructions on all aspects of driving a campervan hire, and even if you have not driven a motorhome before, you will soon be confidently on your way. There are several models of campervan rentals to choose from, including smaller campervans for couples or large and luxury motorhomes that can comfortably accommodate 6 adults.
McRent in Sweden have a depot in Bålsta and there are several ways to get there depending on which of Stockholm’s four international airports -Arlanda, Bromma, Skavsta and Vasteras- you’re travelling from. For the record, the closest, by a narrow margin over Bromma (BMA), is Arlanda (ARN).
Rent Easy Sweden and SkandiTrip have their depots in Åkersberga, the nearest airport in Stockholm is Bromma, and Touring Cars Stockholm is in Arlandastad, which is closest to Arlanda. Anywhere Campers are available, as the name suggests, anywhere!

Gothenburg
Anywhere Campers in Gothenburg, as we’ve cited previously, could be Anywhere Campers in Sweden (or anywhere in Europe for that matter) but when it comes to motorhome rental in Gothenburg, Rent Easy Sweden and SkandiTrip have two permanent depots. In the case of the former, Rent Easy is based in Lantbruksgatan, which is a mere 15 mins drive from Landvetter Airport, and SkandiTrip in Jönköping are also closest to Landvetter Airport but an additional 5 minutes further away.
For the record, Gothenburg has two International Airports (the other, in addition to Landvetter, is Gothenburg City airport) and the closest domestic airport is Trollhättan-Vänersborg.

Malmö
Okay, regarding Sweden Motorhome rental companies, we all know the deal with Anyway Campers, but only Touring Cars Sweden has a permanent depot in Trelleborg, which is closest to Malmo (MMX) Airport, about 23 km away.
However, it’s worth noting that the second closest is in Copenhagen (CPH) at 43 km, followed by Helsingborg (AGH) at over double that distance. So, assuming you’re travelling from the nearest airport, you’re free to drive or take a taxi -just under half an hour- or grab the bus to Pågatågen train station and then on to Trelleborg, though the total journey will take you the best part of an hour and a half.

Top Attractions and Places to Visit in Sweden
It’s a bit of a ‘where to begin’ scenario when it comes to choosing Sweden’s top attractions. But we had to begin somewhere, so we pooled together first-hand experiences, friend recommendations, local advice and, with a bit of help from the internet, compiled what we think are the finest attractions in Sweden.
Though it’s worth noting that the following has been designed to appeal to a wide raft of self-drive holidaymakers touring Sweden, couples, families, friends and so on, with a range of interests and tastes. In addition to that, we’ve been mindful of the top scenic drives in Sweden so, if you’re planning on checking out Sweden’s fantastic roads, you’ll find places below to help with joining up the dots.
Stockholm Archipelago
For motorhome renters touring Sweden, you need to check out the Stockholm Archipelago, or should that read 3000 islands, each with its own unique identity, surrounded by a coastal cornucopia of inlets, beaches and open sea.
Plan as a scenic drive or part of your Stockholm road trip and factor in the Kapellskärs SCR Camping, a great campsite located in the Riddersholm Nature Reserve. There’s space for your campervan/motorhome and in addition to breathtaking views of the Archipelago, facilities to suit couples, families or groups of friends. And yes, kids are welcome too.
Drottningholm Palace, Stockholm
Though it doesn’t necessarily look any more remarkable than any other Royal Palace in Europe, Drottningholm Palace will already be familiar to fans of architecture. And that’s why it’s significant, it’s aesthetic is based on Renaissance sensibilities as opposed to Gothic ideals, with a decidedly French twist in its stylings.
Of course, Royal Palaces need Royal Gardens, and these are sure to delight die-hard horticulturalists, so point your Swedish campervan or motorhome rental in the direction of Drottningholm Palace and find out why this 16th Century Royal Castle has earned itself a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
Vasa Museum & Skansen, Stockholm
The oldest outdoor museum in the world. If that doesn’t pique your interest you may be better off leaving the Sweden motorhome rental and heading off to Disneyland!
The Vasa Museum and Skansen in Stockholm isn’t just the world’s oldest outdoor museum, it’s the only one that comes with natural, Nordic wildlife and a children’s petting zoo. But it’s the living museum that’s the real draw, here you can see how people lived hundreds of years ago in (a version of) real-time, and there are special events held here throughout the year to keep the action fresh.
Uppsala, Uppland
It’s only an hour’s drive from Stockholm but the region of Uppsala to the northwest of the Capital couldn’t be more diverse. An area of extreme natural beauty, Uppsala isn’t just about the surrounding flora and fauna, it’s a place to see castles and mansions, discover fantastic local produce and, for Swedish campervan or motorhome holidaymakers, a world of scenic drives and undiscovered spots in which to hang out and relax.
Uppsala is also a fantastic spot to visit across the seasons, in so far there are always things to see and do, whatever the temperature.
Ystad, Skåne
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past decade, it may have come to your notice that moody Swedish crime drama is just about the best thing to watch on TV. And, arguably, the pioneer of this revolution in bingeable box sets comes from one down-in-the-mouth detective, Wallander.
But it’s not all about well-defined characters and gripping plots, the real star of the show is the beautiful town of Ystad and the Skåne countryside! Those lucky enough to be renting a campervan and motorhome in Sweden are seriously encouraged to discover the action from behind the scenes.
Lund, Skåne
…And while you’re checking out Ystad, you’re strongly advised to add Lund to your Skåne itinerary too. Not to be confused with Sarah Lund – that was TV smash The Killing, set in Copenhagen – this charming Swedish town is popular with students from all over the world and it’s packed full of museums, galleries, gardens and historical buildings.
It’s also a fantastic place to park up the Sweden motorhome rental and get out there: take a hike or a bike ride and discover the town on foot and just let Lund come to you. For serendipity, this could be the best destination on the page.
Swedish Lapland
Obviously, for parents who have come to Sweden to hire a campervan or motorhome during the winter months, Swedish Lapland is going to be a big hit with the young kids for obvious Santa/Christmas reasons -plan in advance if that’s you.
But, for grown-ups, the real draw is going to be the midnight sun at this time of year, vast national parks and within that, probably the best scenic drives anywhere in Sweden. With that in mind, check out Arctic Camping Jokkmokk for somewhere to stay. It ticks all the boxes for Sweden motorhome renters with whomsoever you’re travelling.
Kalmar, Småland
This historic, pretty town by the sea manages to seamlessly combine the medieval with the modern, starting with the historic, 800-year-old, Kalmar Castle. It sits conveniently amid the winding, cobblestone streets that also lead to art galleries, modern restaurants and bars, with more than a little opportunity for a spot of retail therapy.
For camper or motorhome renters in Sweden that just want some time by the beach, maybe a coastal walk or two thrown in for good measure, then start by heading down to the harbour and checking the seascape before working up to a dip into the Kalmarsund. Perfection.
Gammelstad, Norbotten
If you’re puzzled by Gammelstad’s World Heritage title as the country’s largest Church Town, it’s worth noting that until relatively recently, Church Towns were common in the region: there were as many as 71, Gammelstad is one of just 16 and, arguably, the best preserved.
Needless to say, this will be an important destination for fans of history and/or architecture to check out, but don’t forget the scenic drive in the Sweden motorhome rental from Stockholm to Gammelstad. It’s a ten-hour drive that takes in most of the east coast, so some serious road trip fun to get your teeth stuck into!
Öland
We’ll end our short, must-see destinations with an abundance of natural treats on Sweden’s third-largest island, Öland. But first, an adventure, getting to and from the actual island!
Why? Because you’ll need to cross the 6km long bridge to/from the mainland -after the Vasco da Gama Bridge in Lisbon it’s the longest in Europe- but the action really starts after you’ve arrived.
The scenery on the island (this is all about fields, forests, cliffs and coastlines) is so beguiling it’s been the summer getaway for the Swedish Royal family for over 100 years, and now you, and your Sweden motorhome rental, are invited to discover why.
Campsites and motorhome parks in Sweden
There are a great many places to park your motorhome hire in Sweden at the end of a busy day of sightseeing. When you rent a campervan in Sweden, the first thing you should do is to buy a Camping Card Scandinavia, which is valid for a year and entitles you to various discounts. Some great places to visit in your Sweden RV rental include the following:
Orrefors: directly on the lake, Orrefors is the home of Swedish glass making and you can visit several factories and private glass artists. The Orrefors campsite is 5-star rated with power, shops and internet access.
Kalmar Camping: this one is right on the coast near Kalmarsund, with a beautiful beach and good facilities for families.
Bolmso Island Camping: on Bolmso Island in the Gotaland region is perfect for nature lovers who want to get away from the city in a very picturesque park with good family facilities.
When is the best time of year to rent a campervan in Sweden?
To those new to campervan or motorhome rental in Sweden, it may seem a little unusual to dedicate so much content to, essentially, the weather. But as Sweden is a country of extremes when it comes to the weather, this section is essential.
Driving a campervan or motorhome in Sweden when the weather turns nasty is challenging, but modern winter tyres and regular snowploughing ensure that you don’t necessarily need to abandon those wintery, scenic road trip, plans. For clarity and more than a nod to best practice, we’ve split the region into North, South East and West via four of the country’s most popular destinations: respectively, Värmland, Stockholm, Lund and Gothenburg,
Finally, before you’ve even set off -irrespective of the season you’re hitting the Swedish highways and byways- always check tyre pressures, water, oil and keep an eye on the fuel. And if you’re not sure how to do that, find out how before you get into your Nordic road trip, either off your own bat or through a representative at one of our top motorhome rental companies in Sweden.
All the temperatures below are in Celsius and are intended to provide an overview (rather than a gospel and verse version) of the seasonal weather.
Spring (March to May)
In Sweden, winter tyres are mandatory on your campervan or motorhome rental between 1st December and 31st March. The tread depth must be at least 3 mm, so before setting off, make sure you’ve made provisions for this.
In March the temperatures are not going to get much above 0˚C , so expect snow on the ground at the beginning of Spring, but this should be all but gone by May in most regions. The weather can be unpredictable as well, so ensure you’ve got plenty of removable layers in case you need to adjust to various temperatures. And don’t forget to pack a waterproof!
Summer (June to August)
These are the best, and most popular, months for campervan and motorhomes in Sweden, but they’re also some of the most popular, so expect higher volumes of traffic than normal and take this into consideration when planning your Swedish Road trip. Also, be aware that while it’s summer, temperatures can fluctuate across the country with anything between 10-20˚C . In the far north Swedish Lapland experience the Midnight Sun, where you get almost continuous 24 hour daylight hours from early June until early August.
Feel free to ditch the thermals and the winter coat but be mindful that it can get chilly when the sun goes down. On the whole, it’s going to be pretty mild during the day, you might even find yourself hanging out with your road-trip crew clad in no more than a tee shirt and shorts!
Autumn/Fall (September to November)
Studded tires are allowed between 1st October and 15th April on your campervan or motorhome rental, they can also be fitted if winter road conditions apply or are expected. The North of Sweden sees us back to spring temperatures, but as we head towards winter, the mercury drops to around 0˚C .
Obviously, it’s going to be cold in the evenings, so you’re back to the layers and waterproofs during the day. If you’re planning on venturing north to check out the Northern Lights, the mercury can drop to zero, especially at nighttime: ensure you’re properly attired to combat the cold, so you can enjoy the views without it being ruined by frozen extremities!
Winter (December to February)
In Sweden, all campervans and motorhome rentals must be fitted with winter tyres between 1st December and 31st March. The tread depth must be at least 3 mm. Studded tires are allowed between 1st October and 15th April or if winter road conditions apply or are expected.
It’s winter in Sweden, so it’s going to be very cold and it’s unlikely that you’re going to get much in the way of breaks in the snow on the roads. It’s essential that you’re up to speed with the warmest winter clothing you can fit into your luggage, begin with thermal underclothes and work up with layers to the best parka you can afford. Bear in mind it’s going to be windy as well, so hoods/hats and gloves are mandatory.
Though the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, is visible in Sweden from mid-September right through to late March; the best time to to see this phenomenon is over winter, especially during the months of january an February.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
This section may be at the end, but it’s worth checking from the start: important stuff coming up…
For most Swedish motorhome rental companies, the minimum age is twenty-one. Most companies will charge an insurance surcharge for driver’s under 25 years of age.
Yes, no question. And you may not transport more people in your Swedish campervan or motorhome than the vehicle has seats for. Also, children under 7 must have an approved, backwards-facing child seat in cars, but not placed on any passenger seats with an airbag. Hire companies will have these available for rental, please request when booking.
Yes, but there are caveats!
You cannot stay in the same place for more than one night
You cannot drive your self-drive rental in Sweden anywhere you want: agricultural land; sports fields; anywhere with exposed soil
You cannot camp in national parks, nature reserves or on private properties
Clean up after yourself: shut gates, dispose of fire pits, be considerate…
Do your research. Some places allow free camping, so long as the motorhome is parked on the roadside or in a rest area away from the campsite.
That depends on the motorhome rental company in Sweden, so ask them. However, we already know that Anywhere Campers do allow you to pick up in one place and deliver in another aka one-way motorhome rental. Just one thing to be aware of, travelling outside the Nordics with a motorhome requires special documentation, so please check the terms and conditions, if you are visiting another country.
It’s just not worth it. In Sweden, the legal blood alcohol limit is currently 0.02 -in the UK, for example, it’s 0.08- and the police have the right to demand a blood sample with impunity. If you fail, they’ll chuck you straight into the nearest cell. End of.
Yes, you can. An International Driving Permit in Sweden is not necessarily required. But! Some rental companies might stipulate that an International Driver’s License is required to rent a campervan or motorhome in Sweden from them specifically. So, check.
