Rio Grande National Forest Drive

Holidaying in a RV in Rio Grande National Forest

Rio Grande National Forest is in southwest Colorado. Being 1.86-million acres in extent makes it one of America’s most desirable natural playgrounds. Denver, CO, Salt Lake City, UT and Albuquerque, NM are all convenient places to pick up and return your rental motorhome or campervan. They are also good places to top up with essential supplies.

The Rio Grande National Forest drive encompasses the San Luis alpine agricultural valley, and among the biggest high-altitude deserts in the world. The warmest months are June to September, and the coldest December through to February. There are four designated wilderness areas, namely La Garita, Sangre de Cristo, South San Juan, and Weminuche.

Campground Facilities for Campervans and Motorhomes

There are several RV camping areas at Chama in New Mexico, and Antonito, Creede, Platoro, Saquache, and South Fork in Colorado. While these welcome recreational vehicles, it is best to phone ahead for size limits. They only provide a basic stand. There are no hook-ups for electricity, water, or waste disposal.

The forest is a destination for singles, families, and couples that rejoice in being in the great outdoors, and taking healthy exercise. All camping areas have opportunities for mountain biking, except Platoro. Antonito, Chama, Creede, Platoro, Saquache, and South Fork are all good horse-riding destinations.

Driving Through Rio Grande National Forest

Driving on the highways and byways of Rio Grande National Forest is a relaxing, rewarding recreation. There are many attractions to choose from, so we will just pick two examples. Silver Creek Reservoir Campsite is on the highway between Creede, Colorado, and Salt Lake City. The paved access road leads to paved parking and two picnic units with tables and fireplaces.

North Clear Creek Falls Observation Site is on the Silverthread Scenic Byway twenty-six miles from Creede. It has a smart new restroom, picnic tables, and trails to an overlook with safety railings and information. This handicap-friendly rest stop provides great photo opportunities. However, note it is usually snowed out from December to April.

Boating and Scuba Diving for the Family

Both Creede and Southfork have places to launch a motorized or non-motorized boat, explore reservoirs, and drop a line and catch a fish if the circumstances are right. Scuba diving is possible at Platoro in the reservoir. There is also a lovely waterfall nearby at the end of the Three Forks hiking trail.

You may be a little heart sore when returning your campervan or motorhome rental to Pagosa Springs or Creede. Take courage. Renting a recreational vehicle for a camping holiday opens up endless opportunities.
