Exploring Vancouver Islands by Motorhome Rental

It’s not surprising to see that Travel and Leisure magazine named the Vancouver Islands the best island in 2015.  Its diverse ecosystem includes rainforests, marshes, meadows, beaches, mountains, oceans, rivers and lakes that is home to a great number of wildlife, some of it unique to the region.  Visitors exploring Vancouver Islands by motorhome rental or campervan hire will find that there’s plenty to do all year round.  It’s a premiere spot for whale watching, particularly in early spring and into summer.  There are also several hiking trails offering beautiful views of the mountains and seaside coast.  For those opting for a trip during the winter season, activities include downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and tubing.

How to Get There and Where to Begin

The city of Vancouver is the most common gateway to the Vancouver Islands though some visitors also hail from Victoria and Seattle.  There are ferries from ports all around British Columbia that transport cars, motorhomes and motorbikes; or you can also travel by seaplane from Vancouver.

Before you begin exploring Vancouver Islands, it’s important to know that the island is generally divided up by region and each one will present you with a unique experience.  The most populated area is Central Island; where you’ll find several sandy beaches, temperate climate, great fishing and several picturesque golf courses; or you could visit Butchart Botanical Gardens near Victoria. The Pacific Rim, on the other hand; is what most people usually expect to see when they think about Vancouver Islands.  Images of giant trees inside ancient rainforests, seaside where mist and fog are a common occurrence. Desolate beaches along rocky shores are what you’ll encounter in this wilderness region.

What to Do

Vancouver Island is a popular destination for many outdoor activities.  Pitch a tent or apply for a permit parking for your RV or motorhome rental at the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve where you can hike portions of the Wild Pacific Trail.  The park is also a prime spot to see whales and orcas as they make their annual migration journey.  If water sports is more your cup of tea, head towards the Broken Group Islands; a premier sea kayaking spot on the western shore of Vancouver Islands.  Maneuver through multiple islets where you’ll likely find blowholes, lagoons and sandbars.  You might also come up close and personal with some of the wildlife including sea lions, eagles and whales.

In winter, most people head towards Mount Washington Alpine Resort to ski.  The mountain typically receives over 300 inches of snow annually.  Storm watching is also a popular activity during the winter season.  Head towards the Pacific Rim and watch wind gusts that generate up to 30-foot waves from the comfort of your cozy motorhome rental.
