Geiranger Trollstigen

Geiranger Trollstigen National Tourist Route, Norway

The Geiranger Trollstigen National Tourist Route in Norway is 106 km of pure driving pleasure.  The road takes you all the way from the lovely Lake Langvatnet on Strynefjell to Romsdal’s Sogge Bridge.  The road has an incline of 9 degrees and there are 11 hairpin turns which means that drivers will need to take it a bit slow and remain focussed.  There are a number of places where you can pull over and take in the views so resist the urge to stare off into the distance while at the wheel and wait to reach a lookout point instead.  If you travel with a motorhome, campervan or RV rental, you can make the most out of your stops by serving a delicious meal or snack.  Instead of having to buy food, you can pack all the ingredients you need and whip up something healthy and satisfying while you enjoy your surroundings.

The best sights along the way

Along the first part of the road, Ørnevegen, you will enjoy such special sights as the Seven Sisters Waterfall, the gorgeous Geirangerfjord and the Knivsfla alpine farm.

Two of the most amazing viewpoints that will allow you to really get a feel for your surroundings are at Flydalsjuvet and Dalsnibba.  The Norwegian Fjord Centre is a great place to stop in order learn about the local culture and history.

The Gudbrandsjuvet is a superb sight.  The gorge is 20 meters deep and the whirlpool system is a big draw for tourists.

The Rauma River, Romsdalen Valley and the Romsdal Alps are also scenic points along the way.  Trollveggen is a notable sight since it is Europe’s tallest vertical overhanging rock face.  The Romsdalshorn Towers are located on the other side of the valley and are also worth photographing and enjoying.

Activities and attractions

Attractions like the Bridal Veil and the Seven Sisters can be enjoyed from a distance but, if you want to make the most of your trip, then why not take a ferry ride out to get even closer?  Depending on how much time you have and your personal interests, you might enjoy shorter ferry trips that run between locations like Geiranger and Hellesylt or a longer one like the ferry ride from Geiranger all the way to Valldal.  These trips really allow you to experience your surroundings in a whole new way!

Another popular activity here is hiking. Westerås Farm is a popular hiking destination and, if you like, you can continue on to the Storseterfossen Waterfall.  These falls offer visitors the opportunity to take a walk behind them which is an extraordinary experience, especially if you’ve never been behind a waterfall before.  Another popular hiking trail is the old Kløvstien Track and, if you fancy some kayaking, you can do so at Geirangerfjord.

For those who are looking for a thrill, you can sign up for a rafting adventure.  Alternatively, if you’re looking to take it slow, there are some lovely spots for fishing as you enjoy the peace and quiet.
